Brief history

Shaw Watanabe graduated Keio University School of Medicine, and studied on hematopathology at the National Cancer Institute, U.S.A. After returning to Japan, he worked at the National Cancer Center Research Institute, Tokyo, where he specialized in hematopathology and cancer immunology. Then, he was the director of the Department of Epidemiology at the National Cancer Center and served as a consultant for the WHO smoking cessation program. At the age of 50, he developed diabetes from metabolic syndrome, which he controlled with diet and exercise without medication, and he began research on nutrition as a professor at the Tokyo University of Agriculture. He became President of the National Institute of Health and Nutrition (NIHN), conducting research on health and longevity through diet and exercise.

After retiring from National Institute, he published a bimonthly magazine "Clinical & Functional Nutriology” focusing on nutritional therapy. He is a long-time member of the Japan-US Medical and IARC committees, and was involved in the Society of Anti-Aging Medicine. He was President of the 8th Asia Pacific Congress of Clinical Nutrition (APCCN) in 2013, and served as the President of the Asian Pacific Clinical Nutrition Society (APCNS) 2018-2022.

At the age of 80, he concentrated on research and promotion of brown rice, and established the Medical Rice Association with the aim of "curing unwellness. He has established a consortium for low-protein processed brown rice for kidney disease patients, organic brown rice for healthy longevity, and other products.

Professor Emeritus Kriang Tungsanga graduated from Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, in 1973, and received a postgraduate training as a research fellow at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore. He was appointed as a faculty staff at Department of medicine, Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok. He gradually ascended to the position of Professor of Medicine. His area of interest includes kidney stone disease, early detection and prevention to delay disease progression in chronic kidney disease with particular emphasis on implementation of integrated care at a community health care level. His previous academic positions were Past-President of Nephrology Society of Thailand, of the Royal College of Physicians of Thailand, and Chair of the Committee for National List of Essential Medicine, the Royal Thai Government (2016-2021). I am a nurse at Nagoya University Hospital in Nagoya City, Aichi Prefecture,
and I am a specialist in chronic disease nursing and a certified kidney disease care instructor.
I am involved in the day-to-day care of patients with chronic kidney disease.
I mainly run an outpatient clinic that specializes in preventing the progression of chronic kidney disease in patients with chronic kidney disease. At this clinic, I encourage patients to improve their lifestyles and provide nutritional guidance. I also provide information and support for decision-making for patients with end-stage renal failure who are choosing between renal replacement therapies.

Dr. Atsuko Sakai obtained her Master of Science in Nutrition Science at the University of Tokushima, Japan. She subsequently engaged in feeding service management at Kawasaki Medical School Hospital in Okayama, and nutritional counseling and management for patients with kidney disease, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease at Kawashima Hospital in Tokushima. Following this, she taught nutritional theory and practice at two universities. She earned her Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Tokushima in 2017.
Dr. Sakai currently provides nutritional counseling using coaching at Saito Medical Clinic. She is also a vice president of The Japanese Society of Renal Nutrition and Metabolism (JSRNM) and a member of the Patient Resources Committee in ISRNM. Her research interests include education, diet therapy, and prevention of malnutrition for CKD patients.

After working at a nursing care health facility for the elderly and an acute care hospital, in 2011 started working as a registered dietitian in the community under the name "Nutrition Support Churatsune". Currently, I provide nutritional guidance, menu management, and advice on nutrition and meals at clinics, nurseries, and day services.

In 1990, at the age of 15, I suffered from kidney disease. In 1995, at the age of 20, I developed chronic renal failure and underwent CAPD and HD. In 2019, at the age of 44, received a kidney transplant.
